Fitness and wellness company Altea is hiring 200 new employees ahead of the opening of its new Ottawa facility later this year, the company said in a press release Thursday.
Altea Ottawa is set to open a “first-of-its-kind” facility in the former Canadian Tire building at 1660 Carling Ave. near Churchill Avenue later this year.
The company is hiring a range of roles including personal trainers, fitness instructors and pickleball coaches, as well as customer service associates and front-of-house supervisors.
CEO Jeff York said the new Ottawa location will be the company’s largest launch to date.
“(We’re) looking for driven professionals with diverse skill sets who are eager to be a part of a growing brand that is redefining the fitness and wellness industry,” he said. “This is an exciting time, and we are dedicated to creating job opportunities within the community and building a dynamic workplace where our team members can thrive.”
The 129,000-square-foot fitness centre will have nine studios for boutique classes such as reformer pilates, interval training and hot yoga, as well as a six-court pickleball club, a women’s fitness suite, and recovery lounge. There will also be a supervised on-site child-care club for infants and children.
The press release said an aquatic centre is expected to open on site in 2025.

Altea Active was launched in 2017 by a pair of former senior partners at Movati Athletic, Ottawa native David Wu and Michael Nolan. The company opened its first location in Winnipeg in late 2019 before expanding to Toronto in 2022 and Vancouver last year.
York, who was formerly the CEO of Farm Boy, took the helm of the premium fitness company this past summer.
“My priority is to make (the Ottawa facility) the best fitness concept anybody has seen in Canada,” he told OBJ in July, adding Altea aims to enrol a minimum of 10,000 members in the nation’s capital.
York, who was already a shareholder and a member of the company’s board before taking the reins as chief executive, scoffed at the notion that the fitness and wellness industry – a space dominated by firmly entrenched brands such as GoodLife – is a tough nut to crack.
“The key to competing is, don’t be like your competitors. You’ve got all these (low-cost gyms) where they want you not to use the club – you just get a cheap membership and you keep paying. We actually want the members to use the club,” he said.
