Porter Airlines will continue to grow its Ottawa offerings this summer with a new route to Newfoundland.
The company announced in a press release Tuesday that it is launching a new route between Ottawa and St. John’s, N.L. in June. According to the release, the non-stop route is the only flight of its kind between the two destinations on the market, and this marks the first time in five years that any Canadian carrier has served the route.
The daily roundtrip flights begin June 6.

“Operating this formerly underserved route represents another accomplishment for Porter, further enhancing its presence at YOW,” said Mark Laroche, president and CEO of the Ottawa International Airport Authority, in the press release.
Since the pandemic, Porter has repeatedly expanded its offerings out of Ottawa, including introducing new routes to destinations such as Vancouver and Edmonton. Work is currently underway to establish a new crew base in June for the pilots and flight attendants who staff Porter’s Embraer E195-E2 aircraft.
In January, YOW spokesperson Krista Kealey said Porter was “YOW’s fastest growing carrier,” and credited the airline’s “exceptional growth” locally as one of the factors propelling passenger volumes at YOW back toward pre-pandemic levels for 2024.
“Like Halifax, Fredericton, Moncton and Charlottetown, Porter Airlines’ new YOW-St. John’s service demonstrates the carrier’s success in linking Atlantic Canada to the National Capital Region,” said Laroche. “YOW also serves as an excellent facility for through traffic destined for points beyond, including Western Canada and the U.S.A.”
The new route will be served by the Embraer E195-E2, a single-aisle, 132-seat aircraft.
“We are thrilled that Porter is addressing a key gap in our market by adding a non-stop route from YYT to Ottawa,” said Dennis Hogan, CEO of the St. John’s International Airport Authority. “Connecting our provincial and national capitals provides a welcome option for passengers. We thank Porter for their continued investment and partnership.”
In its press release, Porter also announced that it will be introducing Deer Lake, N.L. as a new destination, with service from Halifax, as part of its Eastern Canada expansion efforts.
“Newfoundland is already an important piece of Porter’s network, with existing service connecting St. John’s with Toronto-Pearson and Halifax,” said Porter president Kevin Jackson. “These new routes mean that passengers have more options to enjoy many of Canada’s signature spots, while enjoying the journey as well as the destination.”
