The University of Ottawa is partnering with an Australian university to offer a program that it says will help business leaders better manage complicated projects and procurements – particularly in the defence sector.
Developed by the Queensland University of Technology, the three-year program will offer degrees in Complex Program Leadership and Strategic Procurement.
The Complex Program Leadership course focuses on skills such as creative thinking, project organization and crisis management. The Strategic Procurement course centres on IP strategy and management, particularly in the defence and security sectors, as well as international contract law.

Given concerns about the shortage of qualified professionals to manage complex procurements for the federal government, an issue that was recently raised by auditor general Michael Ferguson, the university says the timing is right.
“This program will address a regional and national need,” François Julien, dean of the Telfer School of Management, said in a news release.
The university says the program “will complement the recent federal defence procurement strategy” and “will facilitate the effective completion of the large and complex projects that drive national economies at home and abroad.”
Students in the part-time program would attend classes for six one-week blocks during the program, with other coursework being completed online. The program would also involve a two-week international study trip.
Like most MBA programs, this one is targeted at working professionals. The first cohort will begin in January 2015. Tuition is $25,000 a year.
