An Ottawa developer is proposing to build two of what would be the city’s tallest towers in Little Italy, a booming growth area for condominiums.
Richcraft has filed plans with the city to rezone the site just west of the corner of Carling Avenue and Preston Street to make way for one 18-storey building and two 48-storey condo towers.
That would make the two buildings slightly higher than a project planned just slightly to the east. Claridge received the city’s approval to build a 45-storey tower at the northeast corner of Carling and Preston avenues in April, which would have made it the tallest building in the city.

Richcraft is proposing to add 1,123 residential units to the site, which is currently the home of a Honda car dealership. It also wants to add retail and office space, according to a message the city sent out to community stakeholders.
The builder plans to construct a six-level underground parking garage for a total of 766 parking spaces.
A municipal planning consultant recently encouraged Ottawa city councillors to consider high-density developments in the area.
George Dark included the site in his plan for the Little Italy area as a “high profile” zone – the same distinction given to Claridge’s property.
Councillors voted to approve Mr. Dark’s plan, which allows for taller buildings in some areas away from the Preston Street commercial district, earlier this year.
