Ottawa-based IT and cloud services firm Pythian has tapped a former C-suite executive from Japanese conglomerate Hitachi’s big-data analytics subsidiary to oversee its technology strategy.
Pythian announced Monday it has hired Paul Lewis as its new chief technology officer. The 25-year tech industry veteran most recently served as CTO of Hitachi Vantara, a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Hitachi that provides IT consulting and data management services to clients around the world.
“Paul’s extensive understanding of the complexities inherent in IT operations, cloud strategy and digital transformation will bring vast insights to our customers and partners,” Pythian president Keith Millar said in a statement. “His knowledge will be a driving force behind the innovations Pythian brings to its clients.”

Lewis joined Hitachi Vantara’s predecessor, Hitachi Data Systems, in 2013 after nearly a decade in various C-suite roles at financial services firm Davis & Henderson. The Toronto-based exec also serves as a lecturer and member of the board of advisers at York University’s Schulich School of Business.
In a statement, Lewis said he looks forward to championing Pythian’s “relentless focus on data and the cloud.”
Founded in 1997, Pythian offers tech consulting and data analytics services to more than 750 customers, including Toyota, Fox Sports and online retailer Rakuten.
The Ottawa company, which was acquired by New York-based private equity firm Mill Point Capital in the fall of 2019, provides IT support and management to clients running platforms such as Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, Oracle and Microsoft Azure. Pythian also uses big-data analytics to help food retailers and other clients with tasks such as managing their supply chains.
Pythian now has more than 370 employees, 120 of them at the company’s Ottawa headquarters. The firm also has offices in New York, Minneapolis, London and Hyderabad, India.
