Ottawa’s top hospitality workers were feted for their displays of exemplary service at the Stars of the City gala Wednesday evening.
The annual Ottawa Tourism event, held this year at Algonquin College, celebrates representatives from Ottawa’s hotel industry who went above and beyond to ensure their guests had a memorable experience in the nation’s capital.
True to the “stars” moniker, grand prize winner Tyler Pajot of the Best Western Plus in downtown Ottawa acted as a shining beacon to get his guests where they needed to go.

When visitors from New Zealand had their GPS break midway through a North American tour, Pajot stepped up to order them a replacement through his Amazon account. After that device again broke, he arranged to have another sent on to his guests’ next destination in New Brunswick.
Pajot’s performance fittingly earned him the “go the extra mile” award as well as the top prize of the evening.
The Lord Elgin Hotel walked away with two awards Wednesday evening: Megan Malette was named the “hostess with the mostest” for offering a front desk uniform to a guest who had lost her luggage ahead of an important meeting; Christopher Ward was recognized for his dedication to small details that keep guests coming back.
Those same small details earned The Metcalfe Hotel’s Katie Jubenville and Shirley Robson the teamwork award. Both remembered that a guest had previously commented on a particular set of drawer knobs during a previous stay, so when the hotel completed its renovations, they sent the guest that set of drawer knobs as a keepsake.
Other recipients were recognized for their care in times of great need.
David Brossard of the Hilton Lac-Leamy, for example, drove his guests to Montreal to retrieve passports they had left behind. Courtney Groenewoud from Kanata’s TownePlace Suites by Marriott provided a basket of toys to a family displaced by the tornado in Dunrobin a year ago.
For the overall quality of its staff, Les Suites Hotel won the “star team” award.
