A handful of Ottawa-based firms are among a roster of artificial intelligence suppliers that will aim to bring the federal government into the digital age with a new wave of service offerings.

Public Services and Procurement Canada put out a tender last September to any companies interested in becoming a pre-qualified supplier to provide the feds with AI services, solutions and products. Last week the federal department posted its list of companies that made the cut on buyandsell.gc.ca.

These companies will receive notifications about future AI-oriented tenders from PSPC. In some cases, firms will be asked to work together on various solutions.

In total, 19 Ottawa companies and joint ventures were included on a list of more than 70 firms across Canada. Those included are divided into three bands, with the lower bands qualified for lower-value contracts and higher bands qualified for larger deals.

Alex Benay, the fed’s chief information officer, told Techopia shortly after taking the job in 2017 that the government has lagged on its digital transformation efforts to date. In the near future, he said, new technologies such as blockchain and AI will need to be integrated into public services, lest the public sector get left behind.

“If we don’t change how we do things, we will potentially become more and more obsolete,” Benay said.

The feds’ CIO took to Twitter last week the celebrate the AI suppliers milestone.
