Traffic figures at the Ottawa International Airport are bouncing back in the early weeks of the year following stagnant annual passenger volumes in 2019.

Some 406,382 travelers passed through the gates of the Ottawa airport last month, up from roughly 403,000 in January 2019.

The year-over-year boost came from both the domestic and international traffic figures. Domestic passenger volumes accounted for 278,250 travelers in January – an increase of nearly 5,300 from 2019 – while the number of overseas travelers last month was up roughly 2,500 to 66,255.

Transborder traffic, on the other hand, dropped slightly to 61,877 from 66,581 during the same month in 2019.

The Ottawa airport’s service to and from the United States will see both extra capacity and a new setback in March. While United Airlines’ service between YOW and Chicago’s O’Hare Airport is set to resume next month following a nine-month hiatus, the U.S. air carrier’s Newark route is expected to end.

The stronger January figures are likely a welcome sight to the Ottawa International Airport Authority as total passenger volume through the National Capital Region’s travel hub was down slightly last year.

Meanwhile, YOW will see the introduction of its first ultra-low-cost carrier later this year as Flair Airlines begins service to Ottawa.
