How do Ottawa’s business leaders view the city’s economy?


Is business confidence going up or down in Ottawa? Are revenues at local businesses increasing or decreasing? What’s the hiring outlook in the nation’s capital?

The answers to these and dozens of other questions will be shared at a breakfast event on Tuesday, June 6 at the Shaw Centre to mark the release of the 2017 Ottawa Business Growth Survey.

The OBGS – an annual joint project between Abacus Data, Welch LLP, OBJ and the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce – is based on about 1,000 responses by local businesspeople to an online survey.

The goal of the annual study is to obtain an accurate picture of the current state of the city’s economy through the eyes of business leaders, says Abacus Data CEO David Coletto.

“We seek to understand perceptions, expectations, and identify areas where collectively all stakeholders can make the business environment stronger to achieve growth,” he says.


Attendees will receive a complimentary copy of the 2017 report and receive a detailed breakdown of the findings.

Additionally, the breakfast event will feature a panel discussion by several industry leaders on the outlook for their respective industries. Speakers include:

  • Neil Malhotra, vice-president of Claridge Homes;

  • Grant Courville, head of product management for automotive and embedded at BlackBerry QNX;

  • Nina Kressler, president and CEO of the Shaw Centre;

  • Karl Baldauf, vice-president of policy and government relations at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce; and

  • David Coletto, CEO of Abacus Data.
