Grey’s Social Eatery is postponing its opening in the ByWard Market at the site of the former Blue Cactus Bar and Grill to Wednesday.
The new restaurant was originally scheduled to open on Monday evening. Owner Abbis Mahmoud posted about the postponement on social media.
“Though we’re prepared, I’m striving for perfection,” the Dreammind Group founder shared on his Instagram.

Dreammind Group, the entertainment and hospitality company behind establishments such as Med Supper Club, The Show and Happy Fish, took over the space Jan. 1 after Blue Cactus unexpectedly closed its doors following a 35-year run in the Market.
The new 8,600-square-foot restaurant will be a “modern-vintage space with Canadian influences where international and classic dishes meet friendly service and the perfect playlist,” Ilon Tyan, director of marketing at Dreammind Group, announced on his LinkedIn on Sunday.
“We’re honoured to continue the legacy at this iconic corner where The Blue Cactus and Firestone Group thrived for over 35 years,” Tyan said on LinkedIn.
“I started in the Market a long time ago and I really felt the Market needed a spark to create some excitement again,” Abbis Mahmoud, owner of Grey’s and founder of Dreammind Group, told OBJ in January when plans for the new restaurant were first announced. “(Blue Cactus) has been a great venue for over 30 years, but it’s had its time.”

On the Grey’s Social Eatery website, Mahmoud said he aims to “reignite excitement in the Market with a world-class restaurant that will elevate our great city even further.”
In January, Mahmoud told OBJ that, unlike the Med Supper Club at Lansdowne, Grey’s menu will cater to a more budget-minded clientele, with the hope that the restaurant will be a place for both families and business lunches.
“The vibe at Grey’s — featuring Top 40 hits, rock, country music, and timeless sing-alongs — paired with the friendliest staff in a beautiful setting, will make it a home away from home, where everyone feels welcome among friends,” Mahmoud said on the Grey’s website.
Mahmoud had originally projected Grey’s to open at the end of February.
