Giant Tiger may soon have a larger den to call home, as the Ottawa-based discount retail chain has filed plans with the city to expand its existing corporate headquarters on Walkley Road.
Last week planning committee approved Giant Tiger’s proposal for a new four-storey office building and one-storey retail-use podium at 2480 Walkley Rd. The site is currently occupied by 371,570-square-feet of building space containing both the company’s corporate headquarters and a retail store, but most of the facility is taken up by a warehouse that formerly housed a Giant Tiger distribution centre.

The multi-phased development would see much of the existing structure maintained as an ancillary store connected to the new corporate building, which will contain roughly 187,000 square feet of office space. A portion of the warehouse will be demolished for construction staging purposes, but additional work will see 182,685 square feet of industrial space maintained for lease to future tenants.
Planning committee is recommending council approve a zoning bylaw amendment to allow the ancillary retail use on the site and raise the existing height limits from 18 metres to 22 metres.
