A Gatineau-based developer wants to tear down a Merivale Road strip mall and replace it with a midrise residential apartment building.
Katasa Group recently filed an application with the city to build a nine-storey complex at 1509 Merivale Rd., just south of the intersection of Clyde Avenue, containing 203 residential suites as well as a two-storey underground parking garage with about 110 spaces.
A two-storey commercial strip mall and surface parking lot that currently occupy the property would be demolished to make way for the new development. Katasa says the plan will also require the remediation of contaminated soil at the site.

Katasa plans to develop the property in two phases, with the current application covering the first proposed building, a U-shaped property framed by an internal courtyard. A second apartment complex that is expected to roughly mirror the original design would be located on the south end of the property and will be addressed in a subsequent planning application.
An outdoor greenspace and patio would be located on the north side of the property. Indoor facilities would include a gym, a business centre and a children’s play area.
Katasa says the proposal complies with all current zoning regulations.
