An Ottawa-based startup will provide its software to London’s Fanshawe College in hopes of training students to prevent fires in smart cities.
Advance Property eXposure, or APX, develops software to give municipal fire departments and other emergency services a heads-up on buildings’ layouts, key features and particular hazards before arriving on the scene.
The Ottawa company announced a partnership with Fanshawe on Wednesday that will see the college use the APX software to educate future fire prevention officers starting this September. The hope is that students trained on digital technology will be able to reduce the hundreds of annual fire-related deaths across Canada. Fire kills an average of eight people per week across the country, according to statistics from Fire Prevention Canada.

“Using APX’s cutting-edge software in the classroom will ensure our students are fully trained in electronic record-keeping when they graduate and begin careers as fire inspection prevention officers,” said Frank Donati, co-ordinator of Fanshawe’s Fire Inspection and Fire Safety Education program, in a statement.
Techopia named APX a startup to watch earlier this year, as its SaaS solution could have the potential to not only keep first responders safer, but also lay the foundations of a smart city.
