A new training centre being built in Kanata will ensure tradespeople get the skills they need to keep up with construction industry demand, the president of the local union chapter said Thursday.
“We are very excited to be building this new facility in Ottawa. It will ensure that our skilled workers remain on the cutting edge of their trades by receiving the highest level of training possible,” the United Brotherhood of Carpenters’ and Joiners of America Local 93’s Rod Thompson said in a statement.
Deputy mayor Mark Taylor and Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson were on hand for the groundbreaking of the 65,000-square-foot facility on Campeau Drive, which is intended to be a training and education facility to help tradespeople learn carpentry, interior systems, flooring, scaffolding and other skills.

“The city of Ottawa relies on attracting and retaining tradespeople with the latest skills and training,” Mr. Taylor said in a statement. “Training people locally not only creates rewarding long-term employment but it helps us become a more dynamic and prosperous city.”
Statistics show the construction industry will see a high turnover in the next decade due to retirements, the union said in a release, adding “it’s essential that the shortage of skilled workers be addressed.”
