Brigil buys Richmond Road retirement residence for $2.4M

Gatineau homebuilder Brigil Construction has decided to move into the full-service retirement home business with the purchase of a 1.23-acre property in Ottawa’s west end for $2.4 million.

The site at 2716 Richmond Rd. is currently home to a 53,000-square foot retirement residence that’s been vacant for several years. The company plans to invest between $1.5 million and $2 million on upgrades to the facility, said Martin Chenier, Brigil’s Ontario general manager.

The company has already put out tenders for the work, he said. This will include improvements to aesthetics such as carpeting and overhauling the ventilation and electrical systems.

The purchase represents a new line of business for Brigil.

The company has retirement homes in other parts of the city but they are geared towards “younger” seniors, Mr. Chenier said. The Richmond Road facility will be full service, which means amenities such as assisted care.

However he said this purchase doesn’t necessarily mean the company will be expanding in this market.

The company simply saw good value at that purchase price, he said.

“We just saw it as an opportunity and we seized it,” he said.

Brigil hopes to have the facility open by next summer.
