American defence firm L-3 Communications Holdings announced Wednesday it will open a design, engineering and support facility in Ottawa that will be home to a team of highly specialized design, software and systems engineers.
The facility, operating under L-3 Communication Systems – Canada, will house a communications systems lab that will serve as an integration test bed and demonstration space for maritime communications projects related to the Royal Canadian Navy’s submarine and surface fleets.
The company said in a news release the facility will showcase innovation, promote in-country research and cultivate local academic and technology partnerships.

The Morrison Drive facility is expected to be fully operational by July 1, according to Peter Gartenburg, vice-president of L-3 Canada operations. He said 20 new staff, mostly engineers, will be hired.
L-3 said its business is growing in Canada as it focuses on marine communications and electronic systems integration.
John Mega, president of L-3’s Communication Systems business division, said the new facility will be an “important contributor” to the city’s technology ecosystem.
“The creation of this engineering centre reaffirms our long-standing partnership with the Canadian government and local industry and our commitment to broaden access to L-3’s products and services,” Mr. Mega said in a statement.
Based in New York City, L-3 is a communication and electronic systems and products provider for both military and commercial platforms. It employs 38,000 people around the world and posted sales of $10.5 billion in 2015.
