New AI hub at Algonquin College to help local organizations adopt cloud and AI technologies

Algonquin College

Algonquin College is partnering with Amazon Web Services (AWS) Canada to launch an AI Accelerator Hub that will help companies and community organizers adopt cloud and AI technologies, the college announced this week.

The hub brings together existing applied research programs at Algonquin, but also layers in industry-leading cloud computing resources and training to impact productivity for local organizations, the college said in a news release.

“Ottawa is home to bold AI founders and innovators reshaping industries and building Canada’s AI future with purpose,” said Sonya Shorey, president and CEO at Invest Ottawa, in the release. “Algonquin College’s new AI Accelerator Hub, powered by AWS Canada, strengthens our ecosystem by accelerating access to transformative technologies, top talent and cutting-edge research. It will help companies harness AI for smarter decisions, faster execution and greater impact.”

Adoption of cloud and AI technologies can be a challenge for many organizations. The hub will provide a rapid engagement model to explore and discover targeted AI and cloud solutions.

“Having access to the cloud is just one of the puzzle pieces,” said Coral Kennett, AWS Canada education leader. “Because technology changes so quickly and evolves, research teams can benefit from working alongside cloud computing experts and industry to suggest and implement best practices on how to set up their architecture.”

AWS will support the hub by providing research credits, grant application support and technical expertise.

Algonquin College has already helped to solve challenges with cloud and AI technology. For example, the college worked with physicians at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario to develop an award-winning cloud-based AI solution called InsightScope on AWS to rapidly accelerate evidence-based decision-making in health care. Researchers at Algonquin also supported local startup AirShare in developing and adopting AI technology solutions for its innovative drone disablement system. Most recently, the college launched the micro-net project focused on harnessing wearable technology and machine learning for studying stress and resilience for first responders.

“Algonquin College has a rich history of bringing together students, professors, industry and community organizations to collaborate on projects. We work with some large recognizable brands such as Loblaws and Canada Post, but there are countless small and medium companies and organizations that depend on our support too,” said Philip Dawe, director of applied research at Algonquin.
