The dust seems to be settling on WiLAN’s lengthy legal battle with one of the world’s largest tech companies.
The Ottawa-based company, which operates as a division of Quaterhill, was awarded $85.23 million Friday in a re-trial against Apple concerning patent infringements for wireless technologies. The case was decided by a jury in a United States District Court in California.
The trial followed an earlier decision in August 2018 when a jury ordered Apple to pay WiLAN $145.1 million in damages. A later appeal would uphold that court’s findings, but a re-trial was ordered specifically on the damages, resulting in last week’s verdict containing a lower financial award.
