Two Ottawa colleges will get a cut of $45 million in previously promised federal funding aimed at promoting research partnerships between post-secondary institutions and private companies.
Algonquin College will receive $239,795 towards its Service Learning in Design & Engineering initiative, or SLiDE. The program is part of Algonquin’s new social innovation hub and pushes design and engineering students to develop digital solutions to issues facing charities and non-profits.
The college is partnering with Carleton University, IBM Canada, Impact Hub Ottawa, Ottawa Community Foundation and the Centre for Social Enterprise Development on its SLiDE initiative.

La Cité will get $146,399 to purchase equipment for its Technology Access Centre in Bio-Innovation. Since opening in 2015, the lab has provided small- and medium-sized businesses with access to tech for applied industry research in areas such as genetic engineering and biopharmaceuticals.
The $45 million in spending, allocated in the 2018 federal budget, comes from two funds operated by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. An additional 92 projects across Canada will receive funding from Monday’s announcements.
