A U.S. district court judge in California has ruled Kilopass Technology must pay Ottawa-based Sidense Corp. $5.5 million to cover attorneys’ fees and associated costs in what she called an “objectively baseless” patent infringement lawsuit.
The ruling dates back to a case that began in 2010 when California-based Kilopass accused Sidense of patent infringement. Sidense won that ruling in 2012, as well as the subsequent appeal.
Sidense then asked for compensation, but that request was denied. That decision was later reversed on appeal, leading to Monday’s announcement.
