An Ottawa-based fibre-optics company is receiving up to $100,000 in federal funding, the government announced Monday.
OZ Optics will use the investment from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario to automate and optimize a laser writing process, allowing it to manufacture better products faster at its locations in Stittsville, Turkey and China.
This announcement is the first from the federal government’s partnership with Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters’ SMART Advanced Technologies for Global Growth program.

OZ Optics vice-president of components Garland Best said investment in research and development is crucial for the company to be a fibre optics leader.
“The SMART program gives OZ Optics and other companies the resources and ability to continue that work, ensuring that Canada plays a leading role in the global economy, both now and in the future,” Mr. Best said in a statement.
Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters president and CEO Jayson Myers said advanced manufacturing technologies will help Ontario firms succeed in an increasingly competitive business world.
“The Ontario economy depends on manufacturers to drive exports, commercialize most new technologies and create high-paying jobs across a variety of industrial and services sectors, so in many respects our economic prospects are directly tied to the future of manufacturing in Ontario,” Mr. Myers said in a statement.
