Local developer Tamarack Homes is one step closer to breaking ground on a massive new development planned for the eastern edge of Orleans.

Councillors on the city’s planning committee, which has to give approval before builders can launch large projects, voted Tuesday to give the preliminary go-ahead for the builder’s Cardinal Creek Village project.

Tamarack wants to build 3,000 mostly single and semi-detached homes east of Trim Road and north of Old Montreal Road as part of the development, which will cover roughly 208 hectares of land.
The plan also calls for two different commercial areas, featuring stores such as restaurants and grocery stores, in the area.
“This will be the best new community in Ottawa once it’s built to completion,” said Stephen Blais, the councillor for the area.
Delegations who spoke to the committee were mostly in favour of the proposal but some expressed concern about what they believed would be “big box” stores located close to the river.
Teg Phillips of Tamarack said they are still working on the specifics of the proposal and don’t plan on bringing zoning requests or site plans to the city for at least three to five years.
Full council will be responsible for giving final approval to Tamarack’s request, which comes in the form of an amendment to the city’s official plan.
