$20M hydro generating station under construction in Renfrew

A Renfrew-based excavation company has won the largest portion of a contract to build a $20-million water power generating station in the Ottawa Valley.

Bonnechere Excavating Inc. will be handling about half of the work on Renfrew Power Generation’s Thomas Low Generating Station, said Charlie Jamieson, the project manager.

The station, construction of which is set to begin this month, will have a capacity for four megawatts of energy when it’s completed at the end of next year. Each year it’s expected to create 18.56 gigawatt hours.

Several other companies are involved in the project, said Mr. Jamieson. Norcan Hydraulic Turbine Inc. of Carleton Place will provide the turbines, while BluMetric of Carp did the environmental and engineering work.

Several smaller companies are involved in the project as well, he said.
