One of Kanata’s fastest growing firms is moving, but not far: You.i TV has a new home, with plenty of space for its freshly expanded team.
The developer of TV software apps will move to 307 Legget Dr. this fall, a stone’s throw from its current home on Solandt Road. The new building – part of KRP Properties’ large west-end portfolio – features 40,000 square feet of space, with the option of expanding to a third floor with an extra 20,000 square feet. Altogether, the building would have capacity for as many as 300 employees – space that You.i TV is likely to need in the coming years.
Growing the firm’s headcount has been a primary focus for the firm since landing an $12-million series B round last September, led by client Time Warner. CEO Jason Flick says the firm has added roughly 100 employees over the past 12 months, standing at roughly 200 today.

Now, having successfully scaled the firm from a small to medium-sized enterprise, hiring is no longer the primary goal: It’s about servicing new and existing customers and developing the best product with the assembled team.
“We’ve got this critical mass now where we can deliver,” Mr. Flick tells OBJ.

You.i TV has been doubling its headcount annually for the past seven years, but that’s not the gameplan anymore. While Mr. Flick anticipates an additional 50 to 100 new employees over the next two years, he says the main goal is continuing to achieve five-times growth in annual recurring revenue.
“It’s definitely a long-term commitment to Kanata. You just can’t beat the people that are here.”

Retrofits are planned for the new building before You.i makes the move later this fall. It’s an open concept space, which Mr. Flick says is key to the collaborative culture of the firm. Its new home will feature amenities such as a coffee shop, a room in the shape of You.i’s logo and a community space so that the firm can continue to host events for its Kanata North neighbours.
“Really it’s about preserving our roots, building a really great environment.”
Mr. Flick says he had received a lot of questions about where You.i TV would “end up,” but this this move should settle some of the debate: the firm has a 10-year lease on the Kanata space.
“It’s definitely a long-term commitment to Kanata. You just can’t beat the people that are here, the environment,” he says.
“And we’re closer to a pub,” he adds.
