UFC show in Ottawa in June sells out quickly, fastest sellout ever at venue

The UFC’s first show in Ottawa wasted little time selling out.

Tickets went on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday, although there was a pre-sale Wednesday and Thursday to UFC Fight Club and newsletter subscribers, respectively. The UFC issued a release at 12:35 p.m. Friday that the televised MMA card, with more than 10,000 tickets sold, has become the fastest sellout at The Arena at TD Place.

The June 18 card will also be the largest arena show in TD Place history.

The main event is matchup of top welterweight contenders, pitting No. 1 Rory (Red King) MacDonald against No. 2 Stephen (Wonderboy) Thompson.

MacDonald, a native of Kelowna, B.C., who fights out of Montreal, is one of seven Canadians on the card.

The others are Patrick (The Predator) Cote, Steve (The Boss) Bosse, Elias (The Spartan) Theodorou, Jason Saggo, Olivier (The Quebec Kid) Aubin-Mercier, and Misha Cirkunov.

Alex Garcia, also on the card, is from the Dominican Repuic but trains in Montreal.

Ottawa is the ninth Canadian city to host a UFC show, joining Calgary, Halifax, Montreal, Quebec City, Saskatoon, Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg. It will mark the UFC’s 20th event north of the border.

The UFC plans two more cards in Canada this year, including one pay-per-view. Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver are in the mix for the shows.
