Ottawa air travellers seeking fun in the sun this winter now have more options to escape Mother Nature’s chilly grip.
Low-cost charter carrier Sunwing Airlines announced Friday morning on Twitter it was adding new direct flights from Ottawa and Toronto’s Pearson airport to Miami beginning in December.
Sunwing said flights from Ottawa to Miami will commence on Dec. 15 and run until March 30, 2019. The non-stop flights will depart Ottawa each Saturday at 6:40 a.m., with return flights from Miami leaving at noon on Saturdays. Return fares start at about $544.

The additional flights are more good news for Ottawa’s airport, which is enjoying a banner year.
The airport authority said in August that passenger volumes for the key holiday month of July were up 8.7 per cent over the year before, with more than 446,000 passengers travelling through Macdonald-Cartier International Airport.
Overall, passenger volumes at the airport were up 4.4 per cent in the first half of 2018, with officials anticipating a record-breaking year for air travel through the region.
