Cadillac Fairview’s plan to construct an addition to the Rideau Centre is approaching another key milestone at City Hall.
The owner of the downtown shopping mall has submitted to the city a site plan control proposal, which is a set of documents builders are required to prepare in advance of significant construction projects.
The filing also provides the first public insights into how the expansion will look.

The city says there will be a new major entrance to the mall along Rideau Street. Additionally, there will be at-grade customer access to the new stores that front Rideau Street.
In total, there will be approximately 28 new stores added to the existing 138 retail units. As previously reported, the former two-storey Sears store will be converted into a Nordstrom location and the food court will be relocated.
The Rideau Centre wants to remove a surface parking lot on the northeast corner of the property to make way for the expansion, which will add 237,883 square feet of retail space. The addition will extend over the site of the former Ogilvy’s department store, which was demolished earlier this year.
There will also be 375 new parking spaces added as part of a new three-storey underground garage. That would push the mall’s total parking capacity to more than 1,700 vehicles.
The site plan submitted to the city also includes provisions to connect the mall to the city’s $2.1 billion light-rail line as well as renovations to existing pedestrian bridges and facade improvements to the structure along Rideau Street and the Mackenzie King Bridge.
Cadillac Fairview announced plans for the expansion last October and projected at the time that it would cost approximately $250 million.
