Porter Airlines is teaming up with American Airlines to give Canadian and U.S. travellers access to more destinations, including Ottawa.
The companies announced Monday they would begin a new “codeshare partnership,” allowing customers of one airline to purchase seats on select flights operated by the other. It’s an arrangement that gives travellers access to a wider variety of North American destinations, the companies said in a release.
"This partnership with American Airlines provides a true competitive alternative for passengers needing more options when flying between Canada and the United States," Edmond Eldebs, Porter’s senior vice-president and chief commercial officer, said in a news release.
"By initially combining Porter’s growing Canadian network with American’s extensive reach in the U.S. and southern destinations, we are offering improved connectivity, in combination with Porter’s commitment to high-quality service.”
The arrangement also allows customers to earn benefits through the airlines’ respective loyalty programs when flying under that airline’s code.
Through the partnership, Porter customers will have access to transborder routes to key U.S. destinations, including Charlotte, North Carolina; Chicago O’Hare; Dallas Fort Worth; and Philadelphia. Porter’s code will also be placed on destinations in American Airlines’ southern network, which includes destinations in the Caribbean, Central America and South America.
In the coming weeks, more routes will become available, including Honolulu, Nashville, New Orleans, Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City and San Jose.
American Airlines, meanwhile, will place its code on select flights operated by Porter from the Toronto Pearson International Airport. Ottawa is one destination American customers will have access to, as well as Edmonton, Halifax, Victoria and Winnipeg. Other destinations will become available in the coming weeks, according to the release.
“Canada is one of the most popular destinations for travellers and American is excited to partner with Porter Airlines to unlock more travel options for customers,” said Anmol Bhargava, American’s senior vice-president of global alliances. “This partnership puts customers at the forefront, and we look forward to providing even more seamless transborder travel options together.”
The two airlines said they will continue to evaluate opportunities for further expansion of their partnership in the future, with more codeshare destinations and loyalty benefits for customers.
