The University of Ottawa is inviting the public to rally around the latest cohort of its Startup Garage program at the end of the month.
Ten startups have come through the three-month summer program that provides new companies with mentorship, office space and a bit of funding. Well-known Ottawa startups including Welbi and Desk Nibbles are among the program’s alumni.
Some from this latest cohort are already making waves: e-commerce firm Noibu won the Capital Angel Network’s pitch award, while vegan and ethical eating directory Ethical Tree recently expanded its services to Toronto.

Members of the public are invited to the Aug. 30 Startup Garage Rally at Bayview Yards to see this year’s crop of companies in action. All 10 startups will pitch their business models, with the audience deciding a final winner based on which venture is judged to have the highest potential.
Catherine Geci, business development manager with uOttawa Innovation Support Services, led the program this year. She says Startup Garage participants are coming in to the program with a wider awareness of the skills needed to build a successful startup and the ambition to make it happen.
“We’re seeing the sophistication of the startups mature as the years go along,” she says.

HappyLight: System to save consumers money on energy bills and give providers analytics on how home energy is used.
Thawrih: Handmakes high-quality sports gear such as hijabs and turbans.
UrbanDash: On-demand laundry and dry cleaning pickup and delivery through a mobile app.
Wandure: App to set tourists up with a truly local tour experience or link up with a new travel buddy.
