Malhotra Family Foundation’s Share Party nets $100,000 for charity

More than 300 flock to Andaz Ottawa ByWard Market hotel for late-night cocktail party

Not only do the Malhotras throw a really good party, but they make it look so easy.

“I think I literally sent out one email,” Shawn Malhotra, co-founder of the Malhotra Family Foundation, said during his brief remarks Friday night at the 7th annual Share Party, held at the Malhotras’ chic new family-owned boutique hotel, Andaz Ottawa ByWard Market, on Dalhousie Street. It opened up last year.

The party was light on speeches and heavy on fun. Malhotra quickly thanked the many business sponsors, telling them how “humbled, amazed and very, very appreciative” he and his wife, family foundation co-founder Louise Malhotra, were for their support.

Malhotra is also a vice-president at Claridge Homes, a prominent family-owned Ottawa real estate developer.

The event was a classic cocktail party, full of food, drinks, dancing and socializing. It raised a net total of $100,000 for this year’s charity of choice, Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa.

The family’s charitable foundation has to date brought in, through the combination of its golf tournaments and annual Share parties, more than $2.3 million for local causes.

Spotted in the packed crowd were John Bassi, owner of Bassi Construction, developer John MacDougall from Uniform Developments, Tomlinson Group of Companies president Kevin Cinq-Mars and – honestly, everywhere you looked – a member of the Taggart or Parkes clan, from the Taggart Group of Companies.

Also present were hotel general manager Matt Graham and Malhotra’s brother, Neil, who’s also a vice-president at Claridge.

The party sold 400 tickets, at $100 each.

Looking upbeat (and unfailingly stylish) was long-time television personality Lianne Laing. She has just publicly announced her decision to leave her morning show host gig at CTV Ottawa, along with its insanely early-morning work hours. She will wrap up this Friday, and then take some time to decide what she’d like to do next in her career.
