In a tough economy, investing in community is more important than ever

When finances are tight, it might seem counterintuitive to give back, but supporting our most vulnerable neighbours this holiday season can actually help businesses weather their own challenges.

At United Way East Ontario, we are deeply connected with communities across Ottawa, Prescott-Russell, Lanark County, and Renfrew County. We know that many people are struggling this season—not just those seeking shelter, food for their families, or mental health services—but the ones working hard to keep local businesses afloat.

We understand the toll that political and economic volatility continues to take, making financial decisions for businesses that much harder.

But there are a few reasons why it’s important, especially in these times, that businesses be active participants in lifting those around them:

  • Supporting charitable causes helps people in our communities when they need it most.
  • Companies that invest in their communities build stronger relationships with their neighbours.
  • Giving back fosters a connection that keeps folks supporting local businesses.
  • Businesses that prioritize social impact attract employees and customers who care about making a difference.

United Way works with local agency partners, all levels of government, people with lived experience, and thousands of donors and volunteers to change lives across our region. Through research, consultation, and analysis, we identify where our communities need help the most and where our investments will have the greatest impact.

We know that for a community to be great, it must be great for everyone. But we can’t do this work alone. Overcoming our biggest challenges depends on the dedication and generosity of people across our region.

In November, we saw local businesses step up and get involved in community initiatives, despite the economic climate. In its second year, the United Way Ultimate Burger Battle brought together 20 restaurants from across our region and raised tens of thousands of dollars which will support vulnerable people in our communities.

Thanks to those businesses, we will be able to:

  • Help youth living in transitional housing get personal care items.
  • Ensure seniors living with dementia are connected to social and recreational day programs.
  • Provide free counselling to people who have experienced gender-based violence.
  • Staff a local crisis hotline with trained volunteer responders.

United Way has a proven track record of success. We hold ourselves accountable for making measurable, lasting change across our region today, and over the long term.

With one donation, you help us tackle the toughest social issues: housing, financial stability, mental wellbeing, and community-building.

This holiday season, as we encourage people to shop locally, we are calling on businesses to help us make a real difference in their communities.

Your generosity offers hope for a future where everyone reaches their full potential.

United in hope, let’s turn our shared challenges into collective action.
