Construction permits plunge 20%

The value of new construction projects approved in November dropped by 20.1 per cent year-over-year, with the number of permits falling to the lowest level for that month since at least 2009, according to municipal records.

The city issued 696 permits last month – down seven per cent from November 2011 – with a total value of $205 million.

One chart-topper adding significantly to that value was a $70.3-million permit for PCL Constructors to build the 21-storey Performance Court office tower at the corner of Elgin and Gloucester streets.

The remaining permits were significantly lower, with the next most valuable construction project coming in at $8.3 million to fit up a one-storey retail store for Target’s impending arrival in the

Place d’Orleans Shopping Centre.

Mattamy Homes received approval for 48 permits to construct blocks of 12 two-storey row houses in West Carleton, valued at either $1.15 million or $1.12 million each.

A total of 37 permits approved for office buildings made up the lion’s share of November’s total value, at $81.3 million.

Excluding Mattamy Homes’ residential project, the top permits in November by value are:
