Construction activity up 7.6%

The overall value of local construction permits increased by 7.6 per cent year-over-year in June, even though the number of permits was down by 13.4 per cent, according to municipal records.

The city issued 848 permits with a combined value of $196.5 million last month, compared to 979 with a total value of $182.6 million a year earlier.

Heavily contributing to the overall value were three permits granted for construction of the Communications Security Establishment Canada’s Long-Term Accommodation Plan on Ogilvie Road, together valued at $39.2 million. The project will be completed by a consortium led by Plenary Properties Ltd. and PCL Constructors Canada Inc. and is expected to create 4,000 to 5,000 jobs in the Ottawa area, according to CSEC’s website.

When construction is completed in November 2014, the facility will be home to the largest repository of top secret information in Canada.

Another notable deal is the Riverstone Retirement Residence’s $12 million permit to build a five-storey, 124-unit retirement building on Industrial Avenue.

The city granted Minto Communities Inc. 48 permits on Titanium Private to construct three-storey, 24-unit stacked rowhouses, with permits valued between $2.4 million and $2.2 million each, as well as 14 permits for Ashcroft Homes to build three-storey, 14-unit stacked rowhouses with permits valued at $1.4 million.
