A wide-ranging search led the Ottawa Hospital right back to where it started as the local institution announced Thursday its current executive vice-president and COO will become its new chief later this year.

Following an international effort to find its next leader, the Ottawa Hospital’s board of directors unanimously recommended that Cameron Love succeed the outgoing Dr. Jack Kitts as president and CEO. Love, who has worked with the local hospital since 1998 and began his current role in 2014, carries a bachelor of science degree from Queen’s University and a master’s in public health from the University of Ottawa.

“The Ottawa Hospital is hiring someone who has already dedicated much of his life and career to making The Ottawa Hospital one of the premier academic hospitals in the country,” said Katherine Cotton, chair of the board of governors, in a statement.

Love will have big shoes to fill. Dr. Kitts was the recipient of the lifetime achievement award at least year’s Best Ottawa Business Awards for his singular dedication to the Ottawa Hospital over the course of his nearly two decades at the helm. He is lauded as the steady hand that guided the institution across two transformational decades and was recently named a member of the Order of Canada. Kitts announced last year that he would retire this coming June.

The biggest challenge on the horizon for Love is the construction of the Ottawa Hospital’s new Civic campus, which is slated to be built in the coming decade on the former site of the Sir John Carling Building.
