Calian Group (TSX:CGY) says it has signed a multimillion-dollar contractwith global communications company MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (TSX:MDA) to provide two Earth-observation antenna systems for the Department of National Defence’s Polar Epsilon 2 project.
The contract, worth $8 million over four years, will support MDA’s own contract with DND. Under the terms of the deal, Calian’s systems engineering division will design, install and commission two radio frequency antennas for use in MDA’s ground systems in Nova Scotia and British Columbia.
The systems will receive images of the Earth transmitted from the next generation of Canadian satellites. The RADARSAT Constellation Mission satellites are set for launch in 2018 as part of the Polar Epsilon 2 project to provide data about environmental issues such as ice flows in coastal waters and mapping natural resources.

“We are very pleased to be working with MDA and DND on this very critical program,” Patrick Thera, president of Calian’s systems engineering division, said in a statement. “This contract win reinforces SED’s capability to develop high performance, critical access, antenna systems in support of Earth-observation missions.”
Calian is a global company that employs more than 2,500 people. Calian’s Ottawa-based business and technology division provides engineering, health and IT services, while the systems engineering division is based in Saskatoon.
The firm has posted record-breaking revenues in three consecutive quarters and reported a quarterly profit of $3.9 million In August.
MDA also has a presence in Ottawa, including a government relations office on Albert Street and a geospatial services facility on Auriga Drive.
