MNP, one of Canada’s largest national accounting and business consulting firms, has announced that Michael Wernick has joined MNP’s Ottawa Consulting team in a senior strategic advisor associate role effective May 13, 2020.

“MNP is continuing our commitment to the public sector and in particular the growth of our federal government consulting practice,” says Adam Ali, a partner with MNP’s public sector consulting practice. “We are excited to have Michael join our team in a capacity that will allow us to benefit internally from his strategic insights while also being able to offer our clients access to his experience and advice in support of their specific projects.”

Michael Wernick retired in 2019 after a 38-year career as one of the key leaders of Canada’s federal public service, culminating in his appointment in 2016 as the 23rd clerk of the Privy Council and secretary to cabinet.

As clerk, he was head of the public service and drove the renewal agenda, tabling four annual reports on the state of Canada’s public service. With 28 years as an executive in the federal public service, including 17 years in the community of deputy ministers, Wernick has a sound foundation to provide leadership and advisory services to today’s public sector leaders.

In addition to the wide range of experience and perspective gained through four different stints at the Privy Council Office, areas of particular expertise include Indigenous issues, intergovernmental relations and partnerships, cultural policy and governance. Wernick has been accountable for large workforces and expenditures and has been a leader and change agent in public sector administration and governance for many years.

“I am excited to join a dynamic, growing firm recognized for its values and people management and am very excited to continue pursuing a lifelong passion for continuously improving Canada’s world-class public sector as it takes on new challenges and opportunities,” says Wernick.

Founded in 1958, MNP has grown to more than 75 locations and 5,000 team members coast to coast and delivers diverse services in accounting, consulting and tax, as well as specialized expertise in every sector and area of business. MNP is the largest of the mid-market focused firms in Canada and has continued to maintain its Canadian roots, helping Canadian businesses at home and abroad to succeed.
