Ottawa-based technology company Taleam Systems has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic with a new web-based solution that allows walk-in clinic patients to avoid crowded clinic waiting rooms.
The solution allows patients to quickly and easily access their clinic appointments from their mobile phones, without having to wait at the clinic – a safer option for all patients as well as clinic staff.
According to the World Health Organization, the COVID-19 virus can be transmitted easily from person to person when we’re in close distance with one another – from standing next to one another to eating lunch together. In spite of lockdowns and preventative measures worldwide, the coronavirus situation has worsened.
For walk-in medical clinics, this has meant that patients have to wait outside or to risk exposure in limited spaces within waiting rooms, as the clinic continues to provide care to patients.
To better help sick patients who attend walk-in clinics for care, Taleam Systems – based in Ottawa – has created a new integrative healthcare solution that places control over medical appointments in the patient’s own hands.
The solution uses a QR Code (a scannable image recognized by your smartphone that can take you directly to a website) and HTML (a coding language for websites) to allow patients to access appointment information instantly without having to be in close quarters with others, thereby curbing the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
The patient simply uses Taleam’s solution to access their appointment information on their smartphone. They do not have to wait at the clinic centre to be called, but rather know – through their phone – to show up when the phone displays their name in green colour.
Taleam Systems plans to help walk-in clinics in Ottawa get set up with the new technology solutions. The next step will be to extend the solution to Toronto, Montreal and other nearby cities based on resources and interest. The company also aims to make the new healthcare solution available as open source so that it can be further developed to benefit a greater number of people.
