The Canadian Corps of Commissionaires (Commissionaires) is proudly marking 100 years of dedicated service. Established on July 25, 1925, Commissionaires has played a vital role in providing meaningful employment to veterans and civilians while contributing to Canada’s security landscape. This centennial milestone is not just a reflection of longevity but a testament to resilience and adaptability—a celebration of their unwavering commitment to those who have served and to Canada as a whole.

The Canadian Corps of Commissionaires: An Origin

To understand how Commissionaires began, it’s important to look back to England in 1859, when Captain Edward Walter, a retired officer of the Crimean War, founded the British Corps of Commissionaires. His mission was to help veterans transition back to civilian life and employment.

Inspired by this mandate, Commissionaires was established in Canada to assist World War I veterans in reintegrating into civilian life. Following the success of the first division in Montreal in 1925, Commissionaires expanded soon after in Toronto and Vancouver. The St. John’s, Newfoundland (now Newfoundland & Labrador) division opened in 1950, marking the organization’s national reach from coast to coast.

Today, Commissionaires stands as Canada’s largest private sector employer of veterans, with more than 21,000 professionals in 1,200 communities nationwide.

Centennial Celebrations in Ottawa

To honour this remarkable 100-year journey, Commissionaires has planned a series of celebratory events in June 2025 in Ottawa, including a Gala Dinner at the historic Château Laurier, and a highlight of the Centennial Baton and Flag. Initiated in August 2022 in St. John’s, a ceremonial baton and flag travelled more than 10,000 kilometres across the country, symbolizing unity and camaraderie among the divisions.

As they commemorate their centennial, Commissionaires stand ready to welcome visitors from across the country to join the celebrations.

A Century of Service: The Commissionaires Legacy

A proudly Canadian organization, Commissionaires was built in Canada, for Canadians, and continues to serve the country in ways that extend far beyond security services.

As Canada’s only national, not-for-profit private security organization, Commissionaires is committed to supporting veterans through philanthropic contributions such as: Perley Health, Veteran’s House, and The Pepper Pod Retreat Centre for Women Veterans. Additionally, Commissionaires contributes to Military Family Resource Centres and Military Family Services, helping military families access critical programs.

A century of continuous operation is no small feat, particularly in an ever-changing world. Commissionaires has adapted to technological advancements, evolving security threats, and workforce dynamics, demonstrating resilience and an ability to evolve. Despite these changes, their core values of loyalty, integrity and service have remained steadfast.

As they celebrate this milestone, Commissionaires is more than a security provider it is a symbol of Canada’s commitment to its veterans and a true Canadian success story.
