OBJ is partnering with Ottawa-based Canada’s Forest Trust Corporation. (CFTC) and the City of Ottawa to help plant and protect trees in Ottawa as part of the Let’s get growing! campaign.
A portion of proceeds from all newsletter subscriptions and spring event ticket sales will contribute to the program.
CFTC is a social enterprise founded by local entrepreneur and philanthropist Gary Zed to help businesses find turnkey, transparent, impactful and cost-effective climate solutions that engage customers, employees, and the community.
“When Gary approached me with this idea, it made a lot of sense,” says OBJ publisher Michael Curran. “To celebrate OBJ’s 30th anniversary, we’re transitioning from a tabloid newspaper to a beautiful glossy magazine format. We’re making the right environmental decisions with the format change, such as FSC-certified paper, but we wanted to go beyond that.”
Curran hopes the initiative with CFTC will encourage more local business leaders to get on board.
Launched this past fall, the Let’s get growing! campaign invites local businesses and residents to take “measurable climate action.” Funds raised will be provided to the city to protect Ottawa’s tree canopy. Digital dashboards developed by CFTC will track the impact of this initiative.
Zed says the program is the first of its kind for any municipality in Canada and he hopes to bring it to other municipalities.
