As the Project Management Institute Ottawa Valley Outaouais Chapter (PMI OVOC) returns to post-pandemic normalcy, it focuses on community growth, innovation, and professional development. From the PMEvolve conference to expanding membership in Gatineau and Kingston, the chapter is fostering collaboration, offering new opportunities for project managers, and building bridges with local industries through sponsorship and partnership opportunities under its forward-thinking PMI Next strategy.

“Coming out of the pandemic, we’ve been actively working to reconnect and revitalize our community,” says Thomas Doyle III, President and CEO of the Ottawa Valley Outaouais Chapter. The chapter, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year, is positioned as a central hub for project management excellence in the region.

Key to this growth and revitalization is PMI:Next, a multi-year strategy that is guiding the chapter towards long-term sustainability, innovation, and expansion. “PMI:Next is all about preparing for the future of project management,” explains Thomas. “We’re focusing on innovation, community expansion, and creating strong partnerships with local industries and organizations to support our vision.”

As part of PMI:Next, the chapter is launching several key initiatives, including the PMEvolve conference in November. With the theme of “Embracing Change and Fostering Innovation within Project Management Practices,” PMEvolve will bring together industry leaders, project managers, and partners from across the region. In addition, this year, PMI Ottawa Valley Outaouais Chapter will be hosting a Project Manager Dinner and Awards Gala, where they will recognize individuals and organizations making significant contributions to their fields in project management.

PMI:Next forming meaningful connections

“Our biggest focus, through PMI:Next, is not just to grow our community but to form meaningful connections with local businesses, organizations, and industries,” Thomas says. “Sponsorship and partnership opportunities are key to building those connections and ensuring that our chapter continues to offer value to both members and the broader community.”

Doyle encourages local organizations to get involved, highlighting that by partnering with the chapter, companies can gain access to a pool of highly skilled project managers, share in thought leadership opportunities, and play a direct role in shaping the future of the profession. “Through sponsorship and partnership, organizations can leverage the talent, knowledge, and skills of our members, while also supporting their own organizational growth,” he adds.

The chapter’s geographical reach is also expanding under PMI:Next, with a new office in the Kanata North Business Park and the addition of branches in Gatineau and Kingston. “Expanding our reach to different communities ensures that more organizations, particularly in sectors like tech and government, can benefit from the expertise of local project managers,” Thomas says. The chapter held its Annual General Meeting in Kanata in August and is actively engaging French-speaking members in Gatineau as well as building a presence in Kingston.

Doyle also emphasizes the importance of partnerships with local academic institutions, such as St. Lawrence College, Cégep de l’Outaouais, and Algonquin College. “These types of partnerships are just one example of how collaboration can add value to our members and the broader community,” Thomas says. He envisions these collaborations growing in the future, particularly in helping develop the next generation of project managers and connecting them to industry professionals to support industry needs and new project managers growth.

PMI OVOC advances project management

With over 2,700 members, the Ottawa Valley Outaouais chapter remains committed to advancing the practice, science, and profession of project management throughout the region. Doyle notes that project management plays a critical role in virtually every industry, helping organizations deliver projects on time, on budget, and with quality outcomes. “We’re here to show the value project management brings to every sector, from construction and government to tech and education,” he adds.

The PMI chapter offers a wealth of benefits to both members and partners. Membership provides access to certifications, educational and networking opportunities, and peer recognition through formal awards. The chapter also serves as a resource for businesses and organizations, helping them connect with skilled project managers, enhance their project delivery capabilities, and stay ahead of industry trends.

“Project management is more than just managing tasks—it’s about driving success, fostering innovation, and ensuring the sustainable growth of businesses,” Doyle concludes. “Through partnerships and sponsorships, local organizations can tap into our expertise and resources, helping to grow their own capabilities while supporting the project management profession.”
