Ottawa hackers, farmers and angels: Highlights from Techopia Live's first half of 2019

Techopia Live covered emerging sectors, re-emerging entrepreneurs and even a surprise or two over the first half of 2019.

We sat down with local tech leaders such as Aydin Mirzaee, who talked about building his new company Fellow.app in Ottawa. He echoed comments we heard earlier in the year from Capital Angel Network’s Jennifer Francis – that Ottawa’s tech scene is seeing a bit of a “boom,” and now’s the time to take advantage of the capital’s momentum.

We dug into exciting sectors, too. Brennan Turner, CEO of FarmLead, joined us for a special episode filmed at TD Place to share his perspective on agri-tech and how a new generation is paving the way in the field.

We also sat down with a few new players in Ottawa’s tech scene, including CybernetIQ founder Joe Cummins. Fresh off the company’s win at AccelerateOTT – where the pitchfest prize ballooned from $150,000 to $750,000 in a last-minute twist – he told Techopia Live how his history as a “blackhat hacker” equipped him to protect companies’ networks.
