Ottawa-based BTI Systems is entering the new year with record-breaking revenue for 2014 in the books, the company announced Monday.
The company said “unprecedented adoption of cloud services” was a key to its success, which included annual revenue that was 18 per cent higher than the year before.
The cloud and metro networking software provider said it added 18 strategic customers in 2014, and its software is now deployed in international data center hubs such as Tokyo, London, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Toronto, San Jose and New York, to name a few.
It was also selected as one of five companies to be partners in the Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks (CENGN), which opened its doors on Legget Drive in November.
The company said it nearly tripled the number of metro cloud customers in the past two years. Metro cloud revenue accounted for almost half its revenue in 2014.
BTI’s senior vice-president of global marketing, Sally Bament, said most cloud providers have more than one data centre, either as a backup or due to the massive growth of the cloud. Metro networking connects these data centres – usually located within 100km of each other – as one.
When the end user accesses the cloud provider data centre, it shouldn’t care whether the centre is in Orleans, downtown, or Kanata, for example.
“It should all appear as one physical data centre to you and I,” she said.
Ms. Bament said there are all sorts of industry studies showing metro traffic will continue to rise dramatically.
“That’s where our technology is focused. There’s no letting up on the market. I think it has grown beyond, quite frankly, anyone’s wildest expectations at this point,” she said.
BTI also added industry veterans to its leadership team in 2014, including new CEO Colin Doherty in April and senior vice-president, worldwide sales Tim Pillow in August.
Ms. Bament said Mr. Doherty was brought in because of his experience in “scaling companies to the next level,” and his tenure has been a success so far.
“I think Colin’s discipline and focus for the entire team has really allowed us to grow at such a strong rate this year,” she said.
Even with the company well-positioned for 2015, Ms. Bament said the company needs to focus on three things for continued success. Continued expansion outside North America tops her list, followed by entering into more distribution partnerships, and a continued emphasis on execution.
“Focusing on what we do well, and not getting defocused which is always a challenge with a smaller company,” she said.
