Growth mindset through the lens of a world-class football (soccer) team

CU@Kanata & Carleton Future EDge are hosting a presentation and Q&A session at Hub350 with guest speakers from Manchester United F.C. on leadership and the functioning of elite performance and team dynamics from the world of high pressure professional football at Premier League and European Champions League level.

Hosted by Brent Wallace, the session will cover why business is interested in sports and what sports can teach business in dynamic and pressured environments in terms of how to prepare to succeed. In addition, will discuss why the maintenance of a growth mindset is key to repeated serial winning and consistent superior performance over extended time periods, and how to nurture and grow young talent towards world class performance.

Speaker bios:

Mike Phelan

Former Manchester United Player, Head Coach, and Assistant Manager

Mike Phelan is a former Manchester United player, coach and twice assistant manager with multiple FA Premier League titles, FA Cups, Football League Cups, a European Cup Winners Cup, a UEFA Champions League and World Club Champions titles to his name.

A business owner and Chairman, occasional TV pundit and professional opinion media contributor, our chairman will not disappoint. Mike is a vastly experienced and truly elite operator providing a wealth of experience. Phelan has spent time throughout his career lecturing in higher education establishments, headlining conferences, consulting, and providing intel for blue chip and major corporate business and immersing himself throughout his career at institutions far beyond Manchester United.

His insatiable curiosity and growth mindset attitude has taken him to places such as Nike, Westpoint Military Academy, Gulf Oil, Tag Heuer, Educity Iskandar and The League Managers Association to name but a few. Mike has met Nelson Mandela twice and visited The Whitehouse. All part of a day’s work in a colourful and extensive career at the top of his profession amongst some of the world’s sharpest minds and premier leaders.

David Horrocks MPhil MBPsS

Former Head of R & D Manchester United

David has also worked for Manchester United as Head of Research and Development. This role harboured the responsibility for the future of sport and in particular of the multi disciplinary teams (MDT) in tech, science, analytics, psychology and coaching. In addition David has also spent extended periods as a performance director in European, South African and USPA tour golf.

David has travelled the globe in search of excellence within both the MDT and elite business operations, practices and culture. He is also a published peer reviewed scientist in the fields of talent development, elite performance and serial winning with these academic works being specific to Manchester United Football Clubs most successful period of Premier League dominance and European success.

Recent engagement involves collaboration and knowledge transfer with the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, The FA, The FA Premier League, Mercedes AMG Petronas, British Cycling, Red Bull, The London School of Contemporary Dance, The Professional Golfers Association, Ineos, Milwaukee Bucks and leading military and government personnel.

David has also spent time in the college and higher education systems as a lecturer and spent the early part of his career in the technology industry working with the likes of Cisco, Canon and Avaya on behalf of clients in the NHS, Banking and corporate sectors. An engaging speaker and consultant with a wide array of experience at the highest levels in both business and sport.

Brent Wallace

Brent is an award-winning reporter and podcast host. During more than 2 decades at TSN, Wallace covered some of sports’ biggest stories including being TSN’s main reporter at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and the 2012 Summer Games in London. From 13 Stanley Cup Finals, to NHL Awards and Entry Draft’s. From to World Hockey Championships to World Juniors and from NBA Finals to Golf’s major tournaments, the veteran reporter has covered it all.

Now, Wallace has turned his attention to covering the team he knows best, the Ottawa Senators, in a wildly successful podcast called Coming In Hot with co-host Bobby Ryan and Jason York.
