Shopify hires through acquisition

What does a rapidly growing tech firm do when it meets a team of talented software developers?

If you’re Shopify, you buy their entire company.

On Monday, the Ottawa-based company said it was purchasing Waterloo-based Boltmade to bolster Shopify Plus, which provides e-commerce services to its high-volume enterprise clients.

The local company said it was primarily attracted to Boltmade’s 21 employees.

“We first worked with the Boltmade team in early 2016 and quickly realized the team’s huge potential and depth of talent,” said Shopify vice-president Loren Padelford in a statement. “The acquisition of Boltmade will bring a strong group of designers and engineers to Shopify Plus.”

The Boltmade team will join the Shopify Plus office in Waterloo.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
