Will Calian’s profit streak continue?
Coming off record annual revenues and 68 consecutive quarters of profit, one of Ottawa’s largest companies will report its first quarterly earnings of 2019 this week.
On Wednesday Calian Group will report its earnings for the final three months of 2018, during which the company purchased Regina-based IntraGrain Technologies – its third acquisition of the year. Annual revenues were up 11 per cent year-over-year in fiscal 2018.
This coming report should be the last for outgoing chief financial officer Jacqueline Gauthier, who announced in late 2018 that she’s stepping down from the role effective March 1. Ottawa tech veteran Patrick Houston will fill her shoes.
If you’re already looking forward to the weekend, OBJ.Social has eyes on two of the biggest events of the season. On Friday social correspondent Caroline Phillips will be at Kaleidoscope of Hope, an annual gala raising money to provide kids with mental health support. See our coverage from last year’s event here.
The next night, OBJ.Social will be covering the Sens Soirée, which this year will feature some of the Ottawa Senators’ biggest stars throwing it back to the fashions of ’70s disco. It’s a sold-out event, so if you didn’t grab a ticket in time your only access to the groovy evening’s sounds and styles will be through OBJ.Social.
Putting Techopia Live in context
Techopia Live, the regular interview show with Ottawa’s tech leaders and rising startups, will put Contextere CEO Gabe Batstone in the hot seat this week. The company, based out of Bayview Yards in Invest Ottawa’s accelerator program, uses artificial intelligence to collect data about worker behaviour and backgrounds to improve safety through automation.
Contextere was also among local firms recently added to the federal government’s AI suppliers list.
