A local firm will manage Hydro Ottawa’s electricity grid with the help of artificial intelligence.

Ottawa-based BluWave-ai develops AI software to optimize the management of electricity grids, anticipating energy demands and the output of renewable generation equipment. The firm’s solution is installed at the aggregation points of various sensors and communicates information in real-time to grid operators.

Earlier this week, BluWave-ai announced it had landed deals with Hydro Ottawa and the City of Summerside on Prince Edward Island to manage the municipalities’ respective energy grids.

In return, both the Hydro Ottawa and Summerside installations will be used to inform BluWave-ai’s software. A release notes that the two utility services will offer their live networks and expertise as the Ottawa firm continues to develop its AI solution.

The local company notes that it has collaborated with Canadian government officials and the National Research Council’s CanmetENERGY innovation lab in the development of its technology.

Details of the contract were not disclosed.
