One of Ottawa’s post-secondary institutions has released more details about a new multimillion-dollar multi-purpose space on its Aviation Parkway campus that aims to bring students and business leaders closer together, among other uses.
This new building, to be called Place La Cité, will also be available for community uses such as concerts, fashion shows and exhibits, says La Cite spokesperson Pascale Montminy.
A separate area, “La Factorie,” will be focused on technology as well as collaboration between students and small businesses.
“Let’s say there are people who want to start a business and want to come to La Cite to exchange or brainstorm what their business will be doing, it can serve as some kind of business incubator, where they can meet and discuss and invite students to join too,” says Ms. Montminy.
The ground-floor studio and meeting space will have a 360-degree screen, retractable walls and capacity for up to 1,300 people.
The total cost of the project is $30 million. Earlier today, the federal government said it would contribute $7.8 million. The follows a previous pledge by the provincial government to kick in $11.2 million. La Cite’s student association and La Cite’s foundation will collectively pitch in another $10 million.
Three construction contractors have been short-listed for the project and a recommended selection is scheduled to be made to the school’s board in January.
The building is slated to open in September 2018.
