R.W. Tomlinson Ltd. has expanded its access to sand reserves with the recent acquisition of Ottawa-based Burnside Sand and Gravel Ltd., just months after purchasing two other local firms to add to its growing bundle of companies.
Burnside, the region’s largest producer of sand products according to the company, will allow Tomlinson to better control the quality of concrete and asphalt manufactured at its various plants in Ottawa, the acquiring company wrote in a summer newsletter.
The companies are a good fit, Tomlinson stated, because they are both locally owned and operate aggregate processing facilities in the area.

Tomlinson’s vice-president Kevin Cinq-Mars could not be reached for comment, and Burnside referred all media requests to its new parent company.
In May, the Ottawa-based construction company added sewer and water main industries to its resumé with the acquisition of Ottawa Greenbelt Construction Ltd. and Graydex Ottawa Inc. – both of which specialize in sewer and water main projects.
“What’s driving (the acquisitions) is that there is more of a demand for fully integrated contracts from our customers,” Mr. Cinq-Mars said at the time.
“There was a need for us to be able to bundle together a complete vertically-integrated solution for both municipal government and private customers.”
The Tomlinson newsletter did not disclose the purchase price.
